Who is this qualification for?
Security officers often work in challenging or isolated environments. It’s thus important they have the right training to conduct the role effectively while ensuring the safety of themselves and the public. What’s more, they need to meet legal requirements established by bodies such as the Security Industry Authority (SIA).
The Highfield Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Refresher) has been developed for learners who currently hold a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a security officer and need to be brought up to date with the new licence-linked qualifications requirements.
To complete this qualification learners are expected to undertake approximately 9 hours of learning. The SIA stipulates a minimum of 3 hours (0.5-days) if self-study is undertaken. Please refer to Highfield's qualification specification for further details on self-study.

A Security Industry Authority (SIA) Security Guard Refresher Course is designed for existing SIA-licensed security guards who need to renew their license and stay updated with the latest industry standards, regulations, and best practices. - Updates on UK laws affecting security work (e.g., trespass laws, self-defense, and use of force).
- Understanding data protection (GDPR) and confidentiality.
2. Conflict Management & De-escalation Techniques
- Recognizing and managing conflict situations in a security role.
- Effective communication skills to defuse confrontations.
- Handling aggressive behavior and customer service strategies.
3. Physical Intervention (Mandatory)
- Safe and lawful methods for physical intervention.
- Minimizing risk and ensuring personal and public safety.
- Practical scenario training on escorting and restraining techniques.
4. Terror Threat Awareness & Emergency Procedures
- Identifying suspicious behavior and items
- Emergency response to terror-related incidents.
- Understanding evacuation protocols and security alert levels.
5. Health & Safety for Security Guards
- Managing risks in various security environments.
- Fire safety awareness and procedures.
- First aid refresher (depending on employer requirements).
6. Customer Service & Professionalism
- Dealing with the public and handling difficult customers.
- The importance of professional conduct and ethics.
- Maintaining a positive and authoritative presence.
Assessment & Certification
- Multiple-choice exam (covering legal knowledge, conflict management, and professional conduct).
- Physical intervention practical assessment.
- Certificate issued upon successful completion (valid for SIA license renewal).
The refresher course is required every 3 years to maintain compliance with the Security Industry Authority (SIA) regulations. However, your SIA Security Guard license must be renewed every 3 years, and as part of this renewal, you may need to complete refresher training depending on the latest requirements.
Upon successful completion of the SIA Security Guard Refresher course, participants receive an SIA Security Guard certificate. This certificate is essential for remewing SIA Security Guard licences. Here’s what the certification entails:
Eligibility Proof:
The certificate proves that the holder has completed the required training to apply for an SIA Security Guard licence.
Course Content:
Training includes understanding the roles and responsibilities of a security guard, legal aspects, health and safety regulations, fire safety, and public safety.
Skills Acquired
Candidates are taught conflict management, effective communication, and emergency response.
Application for Licence:
After receiving the certificate, candidates must apply to the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to obtain the actual Security Guard licence.
Licence Validity:
The official SIA licence, once issued, is valid for three years and must be displayed while on duty.
