The qualification is aimed at learners who wish to become first-aiders in the workplace. This qualification meets the requirements for training first-aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment.
The course typically spans over three days and involves both theoretical and practical learning sessions to ensure that participants can apply their knowledge effectively in real-life scenarios. Assessments are conducted throughout the course to test both practical skills and theoretical understanding.
Upon successful completion, participants receive a certification that is valid for three years, after which a refresher course is required to renew the certification and update the skills as per current standards.
Course Overview
The primary distinction between Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) lies in the extent of the training provided. EFAW is intended for environments that are considered low-risk, whereas FAW is suited for workplaces that face higher risks. Furthermore, FAW offers more in-depth training for individuals who are designated as first aiders at their place of employment. The First Aid at Work course spans three days, including one day of distance learning and two days of in-class training, while the Emergency First Aid at Work course is completed in just one day. Additionally, the curriculum of each course varies; the First Aid at Work course encompasses a broader array of topics such as managing an unconscious casualty, addressing heart attacks and strokes, and handling spinal injuries. In contrast, the Emergency First Aid at Work course focuses on fundamental areas like basic life support, managing choking incidents, and treating burns and bleeding.
Course Content
To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 22 hours of learning, typically over three days, with a minimum contact time of 18 hours.
The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness. The qualification also covers first aid skills in CPR and use of an AED and assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness such as chest injuries, spinal injuries, anaphylaxis and correct use of auto-injectors.
