Door supervisors are often the first point of contact between many businesses and members of the public. It is important therefore that they are effectively trained and meet legal requirements in what can be a challenging environment.

The Highfield Level 2 Award for Working as a Door Supervisor within the Private Security Industry is aimed at learners who want to apply for a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work legally as a door supervisor. Based on the SIA’s own specifications and updated to meet the latest requirements, it has been developed by Highfield, the leading awarding organisation for security qualifications and written by some of the country’s leading security experts.

To complete this qualification learners are expected to undertake approximately 61 hours of learning. The SIA stipulates a minimum of 44 contact hours (6-days) if self-study is undertaken. Please refer to Highfield's qualification specification for further details on self-study.

Course Overview

The SIA (Security Industry Authority) Door Supervision Course is designed for individuals who want to work as door supervisors in the UK security industry. It provides the necessary training and qualifications to apply for an SIA Door Supervisor Licence, allowing individuals to work in security roles in venues such as nightclubs, bars, events, and other licensed premises.

Course Content

  • Typically takes 4 to 6 days to complete.
  • The total learning time is around 44 guided learning hours (GLH), which includes training, exams, and practical assessments.

The course is divided into four mandatory units:

1. Working in the Private Security Industry

  • Role and responsibilities of security operatives
  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Communication and customer service skills
  • The law and regulations governing security work

2. Working as a Door Supervisor

  • Behavioural standards and conflict resolution
  • Conducting searches and dealing with incidents
  • Arrest procedures and police interaction
  • Venue entry policies and ejections

3. Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry

  • Understanding conflict situations
  • How to de-escalate conflicts
  • Managing difficult and aggressive customers
  • Effective communication techniques

4. Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry

  • Non-aggressive techniques to remove individuals safely
  • Understanding the use of force and legal considerations
  • Escorting techniques and personal safety measures
  • Effective communication techniques

Assessment & Examination

The course includes multiple assessments:

  • Written Exams

    Each unit has a multiple-choice exam that must be passed.

  • Practical Assessments

    Candidates must demonstrate physical intervention and conflict management skills in a controlled environment.

Candidates must pass all exams and assessments to receive the qualification.

Validity of Qualification

  • The qualification is valid for 3 years.
  • After 3 years, individuals must take a refresher course to renew their SIA licence.
  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certification is also required to apply for the licence.

Upon passing, candidates receive a Level 2 Award in Door Supervision from an approved awarding body (e.g., Highfield, BIIAB, or NOCN).

This certificate allows individuals to apply for an SIA Door Supervisor Licence, which is required to work legally in the security industry.
